Antipsychotics and Galactorrhea
-Consumption of certain Antipsychotics, notably Risperidone leads to a side effect of milky nipple discharge, unrelated to the normal milk production of breast-feeding, termed as galactorrhea.
Reason: Increased level of Prolactin
Mechanism:
Note:
Dopamine normally inhibits Prolactin secretion
The action of prolactin is to stimulate breast milk production
•Antipsychotics decrease the level of Dopamine
•When Dopamine is low, there is no inhibition of Prolactin secretion
•Prolactin level rises, thereby causing
galactorrhea
